Study guide Late Paleozoic

1. Briefly describe the situation of the continents and tectonic activities through Late Paleozoic. Know why the Carboniferous glaciation happened, and till what latitude?

2. Kaskaskia sequence, what kind of boundary can we find between Tippecanoe and Kaskaskia? How can you characterize the early Kaskaskia sediment (Oriskany sandstone)? What is its source area?

3. Where would you find extensive Devonian barrier reef?

4. What do the black shale represent in term of sea level? Why is this shale black? What does it tell us about the world ocean circulation? Can it tell us something about the climate of the Devonian (Chattanooga shale)?

5. What are the characteristic sediments during late Kaskaskia?

6. Absaroka sequence? Why the North American geology divided Carboniferous into Missisipian and Pennsilvanian?

7. Where would you find the first sediments of Absaroka and why? What is the name for it? Characterize the sediments on the east vs. west. What are cyclotherms. Describe their formation! Why are they so important? (modern examples).

8. Captain reef? How did it formedt!!! What are the name of some of the basins here? Why are they so important?

9. Ouachita mobile belt. Be able to characterize what happened here?

10. When was the Caledonian orogeny and what area was affected? Name of resulted sedimentary rock?

11. When was the Acadian orogeny and what area was affected? Name of resulted sedimentary rock? Be able to make sketch!!!!

12. When was the Allegheny orogeny and what area was affected? Name of resulted sedimentary rock? Be able to make sketch!!!!

13. Important mineral resources
